A 46-year-old Kansas City man who drove a vehicle at police attempting to stop him has been charged with multiple felony counts in connection with the incident Thursday, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.
James A. Ponder, dob: 10/4/1973, faces Resisting Arrest, Property Damage 3rd Degree and three counts of Assault 4th Degree.*
According to court records, Kansas City police were dispatched on Oct. 3, 2019, to the area of Indiana and Roberts Avenue to assist an officer. The officer had dishcarged his weapon at a vehicle and the suspect had fled the scene. A victim told detectives that the defendant had been stopped and had his hands in the air, when he suddenly dropped his hands and directed the vehicle toward the officer. The officer stated he feared he would be struck and fired shots at the vehicle. The defendant was injured by the gunfire. The defendant, after fleeing, was apprehended in the area of 20th and Askew.
Prosecutors requested a $20,000 bond.
