A Jackson County judge on Friday sentenced Issac M. Carter to 10 total years in prison after the jury convicted him of Involuntary Manslaughter and Armed Criminal Action for the January 2015 killing of Alexis Kane, 14, at the Bay Water Park in Kansas City, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.
A Jackson County jury in March had found Carter guilty and recommended a sentence of 7 years on the C Felony of Involuntary Manslaughter. The jury also recommended 3 years in prison for the separate count of Armed Criminal Action. Judge Sandra Midkiff sentenced Carter to consecutive time, calling the case "absolutely heartbreaking."
According to court records, witnesses saw the victim get into a white Chrysler with two unknown males. Surveillance video from The Bay Waterpark revealed a similar-looking vehicle stop in the parking lot where the victim was discovered on Jan. 11, 2015 in the early morning. The video captured the victim being assaulted and shot.
Assistant Prosecuting Attorneys Daniel Portnoy and Mary Beth Lundak and Terrence Messonnier prosecuted the case on behalf of the state of Missouri.
