A Jackson County jury on Wednesday convicted an Independence man, 27, of charges related to the Dec. 16, 2020, fatal shooting of Oriana Starr inside an Independence residence, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.
The jury convicted Brandon A. McDaniel, dob: 9/21/1994, of Murder 2nd Degree and Armed Criminal Action charges. A sentencing hearing has been scheduled for Sept. 16 at 11 a.m.
According to court records, Independence police responded to the 9900 block of E. 63rd Street in Independence on a reported shooting. The mother of the defendant had called police and reported he had killed his girlfriend, Oriana Starr , on Dec. 16, 2020. They had been arguing when the victim wrapped a cord around his neck and he shot her. Police found the victim on the floor of the apartment. A second witness told police that the defendant told him of the fatal shooting and showed him the firearm he used. The defendant later sold the firearm.
Assistant Prosecuting Attorneys Brian Morris and Kelsey Blackwell prosecuted the case on behalf of the state of Missouri.
