A Kansas City, Kan., 16-year-old has been charged in Oct. 19, 2020, fatal shooting of Cristobal Gutierrez-Castillas in Kansas City's urban core, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.
Jayvon G. Hunter, dob: 9/19/2004, faces Murder 2nd Degree, Unlawful Use of a Weapon and two counts of Armed Criminal Action charges.*
Family Court recently certified Hunter to stand trial as an adult.
According to court records, Kansas City police officers were dispatched to the 4400 block of Tracy Ave. on a reported shooting. They found the victim, Cristobal Gutierrez-Castillas, who had been shot. He later died at an area hospital. The incident was captured on surveillance video. It showed suspects arriving in the area on scooters. One suspect, later identified as Hunter, was seen in an argument with others. Hunter can be seen raising a firearm and shooting at the victim. He is seen going through the victim's pockets and removing a cell phone, before he leaves with others. The cell phone was later recovered and the defendant was listed by the crime lab as a contributor of DNA on the victim's phone.
Prosecutors requested a bond of $150,000 cash.
