A Dixon, MO, woman has been charged in connection with the fatal shooting outside an Independence, MO, motel in August, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.
Courtney Joe Wilcox faces Murder 2nd Degree and Armed Criminal Action charges.*
According to court records filed today, Independence Police Department officers responded to the area of 9800 E US 40 Highway on a report of shots fired in the area. They found a victim on his back in the parking lot of a motel. An autopsy later showed he had been shot once in the back. The defendant was taken into custody in St. Roberts, MO, as a person of interest this week. She told police she gave the victim $1000 to buy narcotics but later came to believe he had "ripped her." She alerted another person and he began to look for the victim. She later saw the victim shot in front of the motel.
The defendant is in custody. A co-defendant already faces charges and is in custody.
