A 41-year-old Kansas City man has been charged in the fatal shooting on July 17, 2016, of James Hines, 34, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.
Antonio Maurice Miles, dob: 5/26/1975, faces felony charges of Murder in then 2nd Degree and Armed Criminal Action.*
According to court records filed today, police found the victim lying on the side of the road in the 7600 block of E. 79th Street. James L. Hines, dob: 1/7/1982, had been fatally shot. A witness told police that the defendant visited, intoxicated and smelling of drugs or chemicals. He said, "I had to kill him." He said the victim was a man James, who he described as "Erica's Dude."
According to court records, the defendant told the witness that he picked the victim up and shot him after the victim got out of the car. The defendant added he tossed the victim's pants at a car wash off Troost. He added that he had throw away the clothes he was wearing at the time of the homicide into a dumpster behind a Liberty, Mo., business. Another witness told police the defendant stated he needed a change of clothes because he wanted to get rid of the clothes and shoes he was wearing during the homicide. Police found the clothes in the dumpster, including a grey shirt and blue Jordan tennis shoes that a witness stated the defendant had been wearing. Police testing of the clothing found the victim's blood on some and Miles DNA on the grey shirt. Police detectives also found reports in which Miles was connected to the victim and often associated with the defendant's sister, Erica,.
Prosecutors have requested a bond of $250,000.
