A 24-year-old Kansas City man has been charged with murder in connection with the fatal shooting this morning of Keith A. Michael in the parking lot of a south KC convenience store, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.
Deandre Simms, dob: 9/8/1994, faces Murder 2nd Degree and Armed Criminal Action charges.*
According to court records filed today, Kansas City police responded at nearly 3 a.m. today, Nov. 29, 2018, to the 5000 block of Blue Ridge Boulevard, where the victim of a shooting was found seated in the driver's seat. He was deceased. The defendant told police who said he shot the victim because the victim was attempting to steal his vehicle. Simms told police said he was at the convenience store after parking his vehicle. He left it running while he went inside, he said. He observed the victim exit another vehicle, walk toward the defendant's vehicle and enter the driver's side. Simms said he left the business and shot at the victim. The defendant stated he didn't know the victim and did not see the victim with a weapon. Surveillance video showed the defendant shot the victim as he attempted to enter the vehicle.
Prosecutors requested a $100,000 bond.
