Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker was joined today by Missouri State Auditor Nicole Galloway in KC to announce new legislation intended to increase penalties for government officials who steal money.
"This gives us a better opportunity to work together to get justice for taxpayers," Baker told the media, gathered Tuesday afternoon outside the offices of the Jackson County Prosecutor in the Downtown Kansas City Courthouse.
Galloway, who also held press conferences today in Springfield and St. Joseph, stated that the new legislation will give prosecutors an important tool to prosecute cases that might otherwise go unpunished. The legislation is being filed by Sen. Bob Dixon, a Republican from Springfield.
"This legislation represents an important partnership between my office, Sen. Dixon and local law enforcement authorities across the state who believe those in positions of public trust must be held accountable to the people they serve," Galloway stated.
