A Jackson County judge today sentenced Joshua Sims, 27, to a prison sentence of 18 years for a beating of his six-month-old child causing significant injuries, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.
Joshua A. Sims, dob: 3/22/1992, was sentenced to 18 years on Domestic Assault 1st Degree Serious Injury and 15 years on a second conviction, Abuse or Neglect of a Child. The defendant had earlier pleaded guilty to those two counts.
According to court records, police were alerted by Children's Mercy Hospital of the child's head injuries. Kansas City police detectives learned from family members that the child had been showing symptoms of trauma, including swelling, limping and vomiting. When the child arrived at Children's Merchy it went in immediately for surgery. Numerous physical injuries were later diagnosed.
