A Jackson County jury on Friday convicted Charles V. Carter in the Christmas Eve 2017 fatal shooting of Abdi Sanweyne as he was was walking home with his groceries, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.
Carles V. Carter Jr., dob: 12/25/1995 was convicted of Murder 2nd Degree and Armed Criminal Action.*
According to court records, Kansas City police responded to the 300 block of Garfield on a reported shooting. They found the victim inside a staircase in a nearby residence. He had suffered a gunshot wound to his left shoulder. He later died in the hospital. A witness told police he heard a gunshot and observed a man running past his vehicle. He contacted a second witness who was standing near the victim who had been shot. The second witness told the first witness that the person who shot the victim was the man who just ran past his vehicle. So the first witness followed the suspect until officers took him into custody. The man tried to hide in a dumpster near Independence Avenue. Police discovered in the dumpster a handgun with an extended magazine. Later, the KCPD Crime Laboratory determined that a shell casing that police found near where the shots were fired at the victim was fired by the gun found in the dumpster.
Sentencing will be at a future date.
Assistant Prosecuting Attornyes Lauren Whiston and Jennifer Tatum prosecuted the case on behalf of the state of Missouri.
