An Independence man faces assault charges after his attempt to steal a truck or items inside it resulted in an exchange of gunfire, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.
The suspect was wounded and is being treated today at an Independence hospital.
Jerrold L. Hendren, dob: 3/4/1977, faces Assault 1st Degree and Armed Criminal Action.*
According to court records, an Independence resident on Hawthorne Avenue was awakened about someone being in his truck. He grabbed a weapon and began to yell at the man in the driver's seat of his company truck. He told him to get out. He told police he believed the man was reaching for a gun. The resident fired a shot and stated he heard other shots being fired. The suspect left in a vehicle after telling someone he had been shot. The same type of vehicle was captured on camera taking Hendren to the hospital. Police searched that vehicle and found a concrete saw that the resident said had been in his truck. Two types of shell casings were found at the scene on Hawthorne.
Prosecutors requested a bond of $150,000.
