A 51-year-old Sugar Creek man faces Murder charges in connection with the fatal shooting on Thursday night of an Independence man, Christopher King, 33, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.
Patrick L. Barkwell, dob: 7-09-1966, faces Murder 2nd Degree and Armed Criminal Action.*
According to court records filed today, the defendant told Independence police that he shot the victim, Christopher King, after he went to an Independence residence and King approached him. He had gone to the residence, witnesses said, to retrieve a vehicle belonging to a friend. After the shooting, he left the scene and tossed the gun, the defendant stated.
Prosecutors requested a bond of $150,000 cash.
