A Kansas City man has been charged in connection with the fatal shooting on Dec. 24, 2019, of Carter McCollum who was shot in a vehicle in the area of 69th and Olive in south Kansas City, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.
Joseph A. Kane, dob: 1/30/1983, faces Murder 2nd Degree, Unlawful Use of a Weapon and two counts of Armed Criminal Action.*
According to court records, Kansas City police responded late Christmas Eve to 72nd and Wabash Avenue on a reported shooting and found the victim on the street outside a Toyota Prius. He had been shot and the Jackson County Medical Examiner later ruled his death a homicide. A witness told police the shooting occurred near 69th and Olive. The vicitm and suspect were involved in a narcotics deal. The victim met the suspect at a restaurant near 69th and Prosepct. While waiting, the witness stated the suspect was observed leaving a nearby house. Once they met, they drove to 69th and Olive. The witness stated that suspect became agitated, got out of the vehicle and began shooting several times. The witness drove away to 72nd and Wabash, until police arrived. A check of the victim's phone showed the victim and the suspect, detectives believed, were communicating just prior to the shooting.
Prosecutors requested a $250,000 cash bond.
