A 34-year-old Kansas City man faces a murder charge in connection with the fatal shooting on Wednesday of Ernest Gibson in the 4000 block of East 69th Street in Kansas City, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.
Brandon D. Johnson, dob: 2/12/1987, faces Murder 2nd Degree and Armed Criminal Action charges.*
According to court records filed today, Kansas City police were dispatched before 1 a.m. on Wednesday to the 4000 block of East 69th Street in Kansas City on a reported shooting. They found the victim, Ernest Gibson, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. The victim's family member stated the defendant had been contacted, apparently about a drug purchase. When the victim went outside to meet the defendant, gunshots rang out minutes later. A witness told police a silver vehicle, like the one the defendant is known to drive, drove away. A check showed the defendant's license plate was detected 14 minutes before the homicide in the area of 63rd and Swope, headed toward the crime scene. A witness told police the defendant and victim had argued over $10 from a previous transaction. The victim was walking away when he was shot, the witness told police.
Prosecutors requested a bond of $250,000 cash.
