A 37-year-old Kansas City man faces 1st Degree Murder charge in connection with the April 23 fatal shooting of Derrick Wren on the sidewalk in the 5700 block of Troost Avenue, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.
Ray A. Johnson, dob: 12/28/1978, faces Murder in the 1st Degree and Armed Criminal Action.*
According to court records filed today, the victim's body was found outside on the curb near a bar at 57th and Troost Avenue. He had been shot. Nine shell casings were found in the scene, as well as personal items and broken eyeglasses. The medical examiner's office determined Derrick Wren died of multiple gunshot wounds.
Surveillance showed two males, one wearing glasses, exiting the bar, then engaging in a physical altercation before the victim was shot multiple times, according to court records filed today. The initial investigation led police to the defendant. Witnesses told police a man wearing a striped shirt shooting the victim. A witness identified Johnson as the the shooter.
Prosecutors requested a bond of $500,000.
