A Jackson County jury today found an Independence man guilty in fatal shooting of Teddis Burns-El in an Independence home, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.
The jury found William M. Miller-Kirkland, dob: 6/17/1991, guilty of Murder 1st Degree and Armed Criminal Action.*
Miller-Kirkland will be sentenced on Oct. 25, 2019.
According to court records, Independence police responded on Dec. 28, 2017 to the 1400 block of Osage Street in Independence. A woman told police that the defendant, her son, had told her he had come over to the residence and shot her fiance. He then fled in a truck. Shortly after 3 a.m, police took the defendant in custody. A witness told police the defendant shot the victim one time. He fell to the floor, then the defendant stood over the victim and shot him multiple times.
Assistant Prosecuting Attorneys Hallie Williams and Jeannette Wolpink prosecuted the case on behalf of the state of Missouri.
