A Kansas City man, 24, faces felony charges in connection with the Sept. 8, 2018, fatal shooting of Gary Starr as he stood in line outside a club in the 18th and Vine area of Kansas City, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.
Brandon D. Jones, dob: 7/18/1995, pleaded guilty to Murder 2nd Degree and Armed Criminal Action charges. As part of the plea agreement, Jones was sentenced to life in prison on the Murder 2nd conviction and 30 years on the Armed Criminal Action conviction. The sentences were set to run concurrently.*
According to court records, police responded to 1700 E. 18th Street on a reported shooting and found the victim, Gary Starr, outside. He died as a result of gunshot wounds. Witnesses told police the victim was in front of a club there in the 18th and Vine area when four males approached on foot. There had been an altercation between the victim and some of the men who approached earlier in 2018, a witness told police. Surveillance video showed four males, including the defendant, approach the line that the victim was in and shoot the victim. Then the defendant runs southbound from the scene.
