A Jackson County judge on Friday sentenced a 26-year-old Kansas City man to 12 years in prison for the fatal shooting in April 2020 of Damen Taylor, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.
A Jackson County jury in November 2021 convicted Dudley of Voluntary Manslaughter and Armed Criminal Action for fatally shooting Damen Taylor, 18, on April 1, 2020. On Friday, a Jackson County judge set sentences of 12 years on the Voluntary Manslaughter and five years on the Armed Criminal Action conviction. The judge set those sentences to run concurrently.
According to court records, Kansas City police responded to the shooting in the 3400 block of East 39th Street and found Taylor had already been transported to the hospital by family members. Dudley and Taylor had been fighting before the shooting occurred, numerous witnesses told officers. Dudley said he pulled the weapon when Taylor started hitting Dudley’s brothers..
