A Kansas City man, 31, shot at three victims, killing one and wounding another, before witnesses said a police officer working nearby responded and fired at the armed man, wounding him, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.

According to court documents filed today, witnesses told police that the defendant shot at three victims in the middle of the day Thursday, while a police officer, working off duty at a construction site, responded and shot at the defendant, wounding him in the leg. One victimm, Elijah J. Muhammad, died at the scene as a result of the gunshots fired by the defendant. Police responded a little after 2 p.m. Thursday to the area of 14th and Bellefontaine regarding shots being fired and an off-duty officer needing assistance. A responding officer contacted the off-duty officer on the scene, who was placing handcuffs on a suspect in the middle of 14th Street. The suspect had been shot in the leg. A witness told police that the off-duty officer repeatedly yelled at the defendant to drop the gun.
Prosecutors requested a bond of $750,000.
