An Independence teen, just 16, faces Murder 1st Degree charge in connection with the Sept. 22, 2016, fatal shooting of James Hill in Independence, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.
Tyrell Young, dob: 1/04/2000, faces Murder 1st Degree, two counts of Robbery 1st Degree and three counts of Armed Criminal Action.*
According to court records, on Sept. 22, 2016, witnesses told Independence police that the defendant brandished a gun at three persons who were outside the Walgreens on S. Sterling Avenue in Independence. He took a cell phone and purse from them. The victim, James Hill, ran after him and the defendant turned and shot Hill in the chest. Surveillance video from area businesses captured the incident. The defendant and another suspect, also a juvenile, ran from the scene.
Young recently was certified to stand trial as an adult.
Prosecutors have requested a bond of $500,000.
