A Kansas City man has been charged with two felonies and a misdemeanor drug charge in connection with the shooting Sunday evening of his daughter, a 1-year-old child, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.
George R. Turrentine, dob: 6/29/1987, faces Endangering the Welfare of a Child 1st Degree, Armed Criminal Action and the A misdemeanor Possession of a Controlled Substance.*
According to court records filed today, Turrentine told police at Research Medical Center that he had accidentally shot himself and his 1-year-old daughter early Sunday evening at his residence in Kansas City. Turrentine said he was cleaning a 9 mm handgun when the gun went off, a bullet going through his arm and into his daughter. He picked her up and took her to the hospital. A woman told police that she was playing with the child on the bed when she heard a "pow" and realized the girl had been shot, along with Turrentine. Police found in the residence the handgun, an AR-15 rifle and green leafy substance believed to be marijuana, as well as apparent blood. The child remains in critical but stable condition with damage to her pelvis and spine.
Prosecutors requested a bond of $50,000.
