A Kansas City man has been charged in connection with the shooting Saturday of a man inside a residence near 55th and Wabash Avenue, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.
Derrick R. Dennis, dob: 5/21/1985, faces Assault in the 2nd Degree, Armed Criminal Action and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm.*
According to court records, Dennis and the victim were inside a residence in the 5500 block of Wabash Avenue. A witness said she heard a pop and Dennis came out and said, "We have to go, the gun just went off." The witness found the victim inside and Dennis left on foot. A witness also told police that no gun was in the residence before Dennis arrived. Dennis later told police he and the victim were messing around with guns and his gun went off. After he left he threw the gun in the river. The defendant is a convicted felon.
Prosecutors have requested a bond of $50,000 cash.
