A 21-year-old Kansas City man has been charged in connection with the shooting this weekend of his pregnant girlfriend, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.
Devante L. Williams, dob: 3/4/1995, faces charges of Assault 2nd Degree for recklessly causing the victim's injury and Armed Criminal Action.*
According to court records, Kansas City, MO, police officers responded to the 3400 block of Harrison on a reported shooting. The victim stated that Williams accidentally shot her in the leg. She stated they were play fighting when a handgun in his hand went off, a bullet striking her in the groin. Another woman and a 1-year-old child were nearby. Williams told police he normally keeps the handgun under his pillow and unloaded. But it accidentally went off. He took the gun and magazine and left the residence, tossing in bushes down an alley. The victim's injuries were non-life threatening and the unborn baby was not harmed.
Prosecutors requested a bond of $75,000.
