[ARCHIVED] Independence man who fled multiple police agencies Thursday faces multiple felony counts

For Immediate Release

Dec. 23, 2016

The Independence man who fled multiple police agencies in Blue Springs on Thursday before he was stopped in Independence now faces multiple felony counts, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters announced today.

Stephen Lundemo, dob: 12/11/1980, faces Assault 2nd Degree on a Law Enforcement Officer, Burglary 1st Degree, Assault 2nd Degree, Robbery 2nd Degree, Resisting Arrest, two counts of Tampering with a Motor Vehicle and Armed Criminal Action.*

According to court records filed today, the suspect encountered Blue Springs police officers about 4:40 in the morning on Thursday. The officers attempted to stop because they believed he was driving a stolen vehicle. But he fled Blue Springs police and the Missouri Highway Patrol. The suspect vehicle went off the road in Grain Valley. Officers around the vehicle believed they heard a gun shot. An officer reported seeing a weapon in the suspect's right hand and fired a shot. The suspect fled on foot. Officers found an ammunition belt and a rifle left behind. Police later heard from a Blue Springs resident who reported a man had stolen a vehicle from his residence after he had been in a struggle. The suspect also reportedly stole several items from the residence. The suspect told the resident he had a gun. Police soon located the vehicle and the suspect led police on a long chase at high speeds until he was eventually taken into custody in Independence.

Prosecutors requested a $500,000 bond.
