A 20-year-old Kearney, Mo., man has been charged in the fatal shooting on Monday of a 16-year-old high school student not far from Van Horn High School, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.
Tymon D. Reed, dob: 6/19/1996, faces Murder in the 2nd Degree and Armed Criminal Action.*
According to court records filed today, Independence police responded before 2:30 p.m. on reports of shots fired and were directed to the 1100 block of S Home Avenue in Independence. Two people were performing CPR on the victim, a 16-year-old boy. Witnesses told police hat the victim was confronted by the defendant while walking with others. Witnesses said the victim tried to avoid the confrontation and walk away. But the defendant kept confronting the victim. The defendant pulled out a gun, and the victim struggled with the defendant for the gun, when a shot was fired. The victim was hit and limped. But as he moved away, the defendant kept shooting at the victim.
Prosecutors requested a $200,000 cash bond.
