A Kansas City North man has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in the death of a Chiefs fan who was struck in traffic following an October 2021 game, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.
Thomas J. Weyer, dob: 11/19/2002, faces the Class D Felony of Leaving the Scene of an Accident.*
According to court records filed Thursday, Kansas City police officers, following an Oct. 10, 2021, Chiefs game responded to Blue Ridge Cutoff and 43rd Street regarding a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle. The victim, Steven L. Hickle had just left the Chiefs game when he was struck by an unknown vehicle, before another vehicle struck him. Witnesses told police that the pedestrian had stepped into a turning lane when he was struck and knocked to the ground. Then he was run over by a second smaller SUV. Witnesses added a third vehicle also may have struck the victim before fleeing. The victim was later pronounced deceased at the hospital. Tips led police to the defendant. The defendant told police he was driving a red pickup after the Chiefs game when Hickle was struck. He said he heard screaming and felt a bump on the side of his vehicle.
This incident remains under investigation.
