A Jackson County judge on Thursday sentenced an Independence man to 20 years in prison in connection with a 2014 fatal vehicular accident near 31st and Grand Avenue, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.
In March, a jury convicted Drew M. Ryland, dob: 6/24/1989, of Murder in the 2nd Degree, Resisting Arrest, five counts of Armed Criminal Action and three counts of Assault 2nd Degree. The Felony Murder charge was based on the fact that the victim, Michael Hernandez, died as a result of the defendant’s perpetration of the Class D Felony Resisting a Lawful Stop.
On Thursday, a Jackson County judge sentenced Ryland to 20 years on the Murder 2nd Degree conviction, 4 years on the Resisting a Lawful Stop, 3 years on each of three Assault 2nd Degree convictions, and three years on four Armed Criminal Action convictions. The judge set all sentences to run concurrently.
Jackson County Assistant Prosecuting Attorneys Dan Portnoy and James Stigall prosecuted the case on behalf of the state of Missouri.
